Relocating for a GM Contract: What to Know Before You Go
Landing a contract at the General Motors Spring Hill Manufacturing plant or the Ultium Cells facility is a great career move. However, packing up your life for a three to six month assignment can be incredibly stressful if you do not know what to expect.
First, let us talk about the commute. The GM plant is massive. Depending on which gate you need to access, your drive time can vary. Finding housing in Spring Hill or Thompson's Station that offers easy access to Saturn Parkway is your best bet for avoiding the local traffic bottlenecks on Highway 31.
Second, rethink how much you actually need to pack. Many contractors overpack because they are used to renting empty apartments. If you secure a fully furnished corporate rental, you can travel light. All you really need are your clothes, your toiletries, and your work gear. When your suite already has a queen bed with a memory foam mattress, a flat screen TV, and a fully equipped kitchenette, you can leave the Uhaul at home.
Finally, bring clothes for every season. Tennessee weather is notoriously unpredictable. You might run your car heater on your way to a morning shift and need your air conditioning for the drive home. Layering is the secret to survival here.
